Five Fashion Exhibitions to Travel for This Summer
Anne Christine Persson, Monday 19 June 2017Here is a guide to five fashion exhibitions to travel for this summer. The Met always kicks off their yearly big fashion exhibition the first Monday in May. And it seems to be the kick off for other fashion exhibitions as well. I have worked in the fashion industry for many years, so I might have a slightly bigger interest than most people. I love the way fashion exhibitions are able to combine cultural disciplines like music, art, film, photography and much more. These are some of the exhibitions I am dying to see this summer.
Five Fashion Exhibitions to Travel for This Summer
Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between at The Met, New York
The Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of Comme des Garçons and Dover Street Market, has taken over The Met until September. 140 examples of her designs for Comme des Garçons will be on display. A thematic exhibition rather than a retrospective examining her fascination with interstitiality, the space between boundaries. This will be The Met’s first show on a living designer since the Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in 1983. And I am sure that it will not disappoint and it will not be boring. On display until 4 September 2017. 1000 5th Avenue, New York
Irving Penn: Centennial at The Met, New York
When you have travelled all the way to New York and The Met to see the Rei Kawakubo show, you should just stay for another one. A major retrospective on the famed photographer Irving Penn is also on display at The Met. For six decades, he worked for Vogue Magazine and it was especially his fashion photographs and portraits that he is renowned for. So spend a few hours at The Met exploring the world of fashion and fashion photography. New York can be scorching hot in the summer time, so a few hours in a perfectly air-conditioned museum might be just what you need. On display until 30 July 2017. 1000 5th Avenue, New York
House Style at Chatsworth House
An exhibition exploring five centuries of fashion and adornment at the stately home of Chatsworth House in Derbyshire in the English countryside. European editor-at-large at Vogue, Hamish Bowles, is the curator and he is a fashion force, so be prepared for an above par exhibition. It will be featuring sartorial ladies such as Stella Tennant, Bess of Hardwick, Adele Astaire and a couple of the Mitford sisters. On show until 22 October 2017. Chatsworth, Bakewell, Derbyshire
Margiela: The Hermès Years at MoMu, Antwerp
Martin Margiela’s twelve seasons as creative director for French fashion house Hermès are explored at the ModeMuseum in Antwerp. Groundbreaking deconstruction and timeless luxury are the focal point of the show and it will also examine the relationship between the Hermés collections and his own brand. The choice of Martin Margiela as creative director for Hermès was a bold choice at the time and the exhibition should be worth the trip to Antwerp. On display until 27 August 2017. Nationalestraat 28, Antwerp
Balenciaga: Shaping Fashion at The Victoria & Albert Museum, London
The exhibition examines the work of the significant Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga. More than 100 pieces created by ‘the master of us all’, as referred to by Christian Dior, and his successors will be on display at the popular museum in London. The exhibition has been highly anticipated and this will make me jump on a plane to London. On show until 18 February, 2018. Cromwell Road, London
